Does Your Dog Jump? Use These Tips to Train Them to Stop
We've all been there. You get home from work or running errands and your dog jumps all over you. This is often one of the first behaviors many dog owners want to break for a number of reasons. If you're looking for good ways to keep your pup from jumping up on you and everyone else, consider these tips.
Implement a Command
First and foremost, it's important to implement a command that encourages your dog to sit nicely and quietly. Use this command frequently, rewarding your pet with a treat each time he or she complies as asked. Be sure to use the command in different scenarios and varying locations so your pet learns it well rather than associating it with a specific time or area.
Start with Yourself
It is best to work on teaching this command when your pet is only around you and your family. This will minimize the distractions and help your pet learn more quickly. They are more likely to understand they can't do something with someone else when they aren't allowed to do it with you either. Once they have a strong grasp on the command you wish to use, start bringing your pet around others to test it out.
Consider a Leash
During the time when you are teaching your pet the command, it can be beneficial to keep them on a leash. This will allow you to exert some control in case the command goes ignored. Once your pet is consistent, the leash will no longer be necessary.
Delay Greetings
Dogs often get excited when guests come over. If the guest addresses the pet with affection immediately upon entering the home, jumping is likely to take over before your pet even thinks about it. This can be minimized by asking your guests to delay petting your dog for a short period of time after they arrive. Once things have settled, it's less likely your pup will jump.
